Oral Reading Fluency 5: "The Power of a Pen in Hand":

Michael liked to write as a child. When he had a pen in hand, he had power. He could make new lives and give them names. He could see other countries and make new worlds.

At first, Michael wrote about places far away from home. Then the child became a man. He began to see life with new eyes. He wrote about people and problems close to home. He wrote about real life. He found his center, and life had meaning.

How to learn English FAST:

Everyone is looking for the secret of how to learn English fast. Of course we want to achieve our goals in the fastest possible way but that often means that we run out of energy along the way. What we need to find out is the fastest and best way to reach our goals. This allows us to succeed and reach the finishing line.

When you strain and push yourself to reach a goal you will often give up without ever reaching your goal. I'm of the opinion that a slow and steady approach to reaching your goals is a lot more effective.

When it comes to learning a language, you have to be realistic. You are not going to be able to learn English overnight. You have to become patient as you work towards your English goals. One way to do this is by establishing a daily English practice. This means that you set aside 20 minutes of every day to do some English pracitce or study. You do this without question every day - the same way that you brush your teeth every day in the morning. It needs to be automatic.

You can be more effective in your English practice if the thing that you're working on is already prepared before you sit down and study. This stops you wasting time looking for something to do.

The thing you practise should be based on the skills you most need to improve. For example, if you need to improve your listening skills, listen to an English learner's podcast everyday. You could also subscribe to an English teacher on YouTube and watch one of their lessons every day.

It's a good idea to stick with your routine for one month before you change it. Over the period of a month, your daily practise accumulates to be a significant amount of time that you have given to developing your English. Over time you will see big improvements.

Making a daily English practice part of your life will also serve to make you a more disciplined person in general. This will serve to make you a stronger and more effective person overall.

How to Stay Motivated to Learn English

How to Stay Motivated to Learn English
How to Stay Motivated to Learn English

Learning English can be hard and tiring so you need a way to stay motivated and excited about your studies. Gabby shares three tips.

How to Stay Motivated to Learn English

How to Stay Motivated to Learn English:

TIP 1: Choose material that will be meaningful to you.

Most textbooks won’t be very inspiring. They focus too much on grammar and language rules and not what you can do with the language. Find topics that are interesting to you and topics that will hold your focus.

This will keep you from getting bored with your studies.

Also, choose materials that you are comfortable with and materials that are challenging. Maintaining this diversity will help improve your language skills at a much faster pace.

TIP 2: Set a clear goal.

Setting goals gives you motivation. When you keep one eye on your progress and one eye on where you want to be in language proficiency, it’s easier to get excited about achieving your own unique idea fluency.

TIP 3: Use English to help others

It is incredibly motivating to be able to use your language skills to help others. Just imagine the gratification when you can share and connect with another person.

Use these three tips and hopefully learning English will be a much happier experience.

How do you want to make a difference with English?

Give no words but mum - Shakespeare Speaks:

NarratorIt was the 23rd of April. William Shakespeare's daughter and his actor friends Robert Harley and Thomas Swann are at the Duck and Whistle. They're getting ready for a celebration. Bess the barmaid is in charge.
BessNow have we got everything? Beer, ale… Where's that Mary Bassett? She's supposed to be bringing the pies…
MaryHere I am, pies and all! I've brought some lovely meat pies and I've got Mr Will's favourite here: a nice cherry pie.
AllOoohhh lovely, he'll like that, lovely…
DaughterOh, I'm so excited Mary! I love parties! Isn't it wonderful having a party for Father's birthday!
MaryNow don't you go telling Mr Will before he gets here, Miss Shakespeare, remember: it's a surprise. Like John Hume says in your father's play Henry VI part II: Seal up your lips, and give no words but mum…
Thomas Swann as John HumeSeal up your lips, and give no words but mum: The business asketh silent secrecy.
DaughterGive no words but mum… I promise, I won't say a word to anyone. Really, I won't!
NarratorWe'll leave them there for now. The exact date of William Shakespeare's birth is not recorded, but it's generally believed that the most likely date was Sunday the 23rd of April, which, interestingly, was also the date of his death, in 1616, at the age of 52. The phrase Give no words but mum, simply means: don't tell anyone - it's a secret. These days, it's usually simplified to just keep mum. Take Australian news website 9News, writing about Mark Hamill, the Star Wars actor, who spoke of how he had to keep the Star Wars storyline secret. The headline was:
Clip 1Mark Hamill to keep mum amid Star Wars Skywalker speculation
NarratorAnother version of the phrase is Mum's the word.
Clip 2Don't tell anyone you saw me here. Mum's the word!
MarySsshhh everybody, here he comes now!
AllQuick, hide, behind the bar, get down, he'll see you…
WillGood afternoon Bess, a pint of your finest… Bess? Hello? Where is everyone?!
AllSurprise!!!! Happy birthday!!!
DaughterHappy birthday father!
WillDaughter?! Is all this for me?!
DaughterYes, father, it is!
Thomas SwannHappy birthday Will!
WillThank you, Thomas.
MaryHappy birthday, Mr Will. Have some cherry pie.
BessHere Mr Will, pint of ale for you.
WillWell now! To party, or… no. Let's party!
AllHooray!

We Can't Stop - Lyric:

It's our party we can do what we want (no drama)
It's our party we can say what we want (Mike will made)
It's our party we can love who we want
We can kiss who we want
We can sing what we want

It's our party we can do what we want
It's our party we can say what we want
It's our party we can love who we want
We can kiss who we want
We can sing what we want

Red cups and sweaty bodies everywhere
Hands in the air like we don't care
'Cause we came to have so much fun now
Bet somebody here might get some now

If you're not ready to go home
Can I get a "Hell, no! "? (Hell no)
'Cause we're gonna go all night
'Til we see the sunlight, alright

So la da di da di
We like to party
Dancing with Molly
Doing whatever we want
This is our house
This is our rules

And we can't stop
And we won't stop
Can't you see it's we who own the night?
Can't you see it's we who 'bout that life?

And we can't stop
And we won't stop
We run things, things don't run we
Don't take nothing from nobody
Yeah, yeah

It's our party we can do what we want
It's our party we can say what we want
It's our party we can love who we want
We can kiss who we want
We can sing what we want

To my home girls here with the big butt
Shaking it like we at a strip club
Remember only God can judge ya
Forget the haters 'cause somebody loves ya
And everyone in line in the bathroom
Trying to get a line in the bathroom
We all so turn up here
Getting turned up, yeah, yeah, yeahhh

So la da di da di
We like to party
Dancing with Molly
Doing whatever we want
This is our house
This is our rules

And we can't stop
And we won't stop
Can't you see it's we who own the night?
Can't you see it's we who 'bout that life?

And we can't stop
And we won't stop
We run things, things don't run we
Don't take nothing from nobody
Yeah, yeah

It's our party we can do what we want
It's our party we can say what we want
It's our party we can love who we want
We can kiss who we want
We can sing what we want

It's our party we can do what we want to
It's our house we can love who we want to
It's our song we can sing if we want to
It's my mouth I can say what I want to
Say yeah, yeah, yeah, ehh

And we can't stop, yeah
And we won't stop, oh
Can't you see it's we who own the night?
Can't you see it's we who 'bout that life?

And we can't stop
And we won't stop
We run things, things don't run we
Don't take nothing from nobody
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, ehh

Learn English With Movies Using Movie Technique

Speak English like a native by learning with movies. Movies can teach you to speak real English naturally. However, to learn with movies you must use the correct technique. Many teachers and students try to learn by simply watching movies and TV shows. Just watching movies is ineffective because you won't understand most of what you hear and you will not learn deeply.

Scientists estimate that the current rate of extinction is 1,000 times greater than it would normally be because of one factor. What has caused this rapid rise in extinctions? Three Secrets You Need to Know About Spoken English:

Judy Thompson, B.A., TESL Certification, professor, author and speaker is an expert in spoken English. A student herself of French and German, Judy knows firsthand the frustrations of learning to speak a new language. Judy lived and taught in South Korea and it was there that she had the first of many revelations about spoken English and how it should be taught.

Newcomers are embarrassed about their accents and grammar mistakes and native speakers are unaware that the way they speak makes it extremely difficult for non-native speakers to understand them.

Judy leads language classes for both native and non-native speakers to foster understanding and effective communication in our diverse community.

A long time resident of Caledon, Ontario, Judy has four children and lives with her husband Richard on a beautiful ten-acre hobby farm. She is an environmental activist who enjoys hiking and skiing. In her spare time, she raises champion hunter show ponies.

Learn English Through Audio Story: Journey to the Center of the Earth:

Journey to the Centre of the Earth has been consistently praised for its style and vision of the world. It explores the prehistory of the globe, but can also be read as a psychological quest, for the journey itself is as important as arrival or discovery. Professor Lidenbrock and Axel travel across Iceland, and then down through an extinct crater towards a sunless sea where they enter a living past and are confronted with the origins of man. A classic of nineteenth-century literature, the novel’s distinctive combination of realism and Romanticism has marked figures as diverse as Sartre and Tournier, Mark Twain and Conan Doyle.
