Let's Learn English 2- Lesson 2: The Interview:

AnnaMs. Weaver is giving new assignments out. I am ready to take on anything she gives me. Well, except reporting traffic from a helicopter. Wish me luck.
Professor BotI wonder what Anna’s new assignment will be? Professor Bot here! While you are watching, look for phrasal, or two-word verbs. Some stay together, like “go back” and some can come apart, like “give [assignments] out.” Good luck, Anna!
Ms. WeaverSo, as I said at the meeting last week, I have new assignments for everyone at The Studio. Anna, you're good at asking questions. So, I want you to go back to hosting and reporting.
AnnaThat sounds great.
Ms. WeaverYou're also a team player. So, I want you team up with someone ...
AnnaThat sounds even better!
Ms. Weaver... someone who is very "different" from you.
AnnaThat sounds ... what do you mean "different"?
Ms. WeaverWell, you are very cheerful, you're a people person. I want you to team up with someone who ... isn't.
AnnaMs. Weaver, I will find that person.
MimiExcuse me. Are you using this chair?
PeteYes.
AnnaPete, hi! Thanks for meeting me.
PeteSure. But I don’t have lots of time, Anna. I’m busy looking for work.
AnnaPete, you can tear these want ads up and throw them away! I have good news!
PeteAnna, I was working on that crossword puzzle.
AnnaOh. Sorry. Sorry. Pete, forget about the crossword puzzle. I have a job offer for you!
PeteI'm listening.
AnnaMy boss wants me to team up with someone to host a talk show. But the person must be different from me. So, I thought of you.
PeteDifferent from you? What do you mean?
AnnaI'm sorry, Pete, I don't have time right now. Here's my boss's address. Your interview is tomorrow morning at 10 am.
PeteBut what do you mean “different”?
AnnaJust be yourself, Pete. Just be yourself.
Professor BotDid you find any two-word verbs? Here’s one example. Pete can throw the wants ads away! Throw away is a two-word verb.
Ms. WeaverThanks for coming in, Pete.
PeteThanks for the opportunity, Ms. Weaver.
Ms. WeaverI need to find out if you have the skills for this job. And I want you to be completely honest.
PeteOkay.
Ms. WeaverFirst, let's talk about your personal skills. Pete, are you a people person?
PeteWell, okay, sometimes I think people talk too much.
Ms. WeaverPete, what work of yours are you most proud of?
PeteLast year, I locked myself in a cabin and wrote a book. I didn't speak to anybody the entire time! It was the best two months of my life.
Ms. WeaverOkay. I think I’ve heard enough.
AnnaHey! Hey, Pete, how was the interview with Ms. Weaver?
PeteWell, she said I was grumpy and not good with people.
AnnaAnd … ?
PeteAnd, I got the job!
AnnaI knew it! Congratulations! Let's go celebrate.
PeteOkay!
Professor BotDid you find more two-word verbs? Here is the list.

Let's Learn English 2- Lesson 1: Budget Cuts:

AnnaHum. Oh! “Important meeting. Everyone must come.” Well, back to work! And my boss has called a meeting. I wonder what it's about. Maybe we're all getting raises! Ooo, there's Jonathan! Maybe he knows.
Professor BotHi! I'm Professor Bot! This video is all about work. People talk about jobs and things that happen at work. Your assignment is to find as many work words as you can. Don't worry, I'll help.
AnnaSo, Jonathan, what do you think today's meeting is about? The email sounded important.
JonathanWell, I have heard people in the building talking about budget cuts.
AnnaOh! Budget cuts? Wait, who has been talking about budget cuts?
JonathanMark in Accounting.
AnnaMark in Accounting? That's one person. That's not “people.”
JonathanI know, but Mark knows everything that goes on at The Studio.
AnnaThat is true. But wait, look at us. We shouldn't gossip. That's how rumors start. We'll just go to the meeting and see what happens.
JonathanYou're right. No more talk about budget cuts.
AmeliaBudget cuts? Oh no!
AmeliaI just heard Anna and Jonathan talking about budget cuts.
KavehThat must be what the meeting is about. When there are budget cuts, people lose their jobs.
AmeliaNot you. You're a good reporter.
KavehAnd it's not you. You've done a great job as a videographer.
AmeliaI can't go back to being a detective. Criminals scare me!
KavehAnd I can't go back to being a teacher! High school kids scare me!
Professor BotDid you hear any work words? They talked about a lot of jobs. You can make the name of a job by adding an ending to a verb! Kaveh reports, so, he's a reporter. Amelia used to detect, so she was a detective. If you teach, you're a teacher. And a videographer….uh, I think you understand. Back to the story.
KavehPenelope, have you heard the news? Today's meeting is about budget cuts.
PenelopeThat's awful! What should I do?
KavehUpdate your résumé. I’ve already updated mine. I’ll see you at the meeting.
Ms. WeaverHello everyone! Quiet, please. Quiet, please!
Ms. WeaverThis meeting won’t take long. Then you can all leave.
Ms. WeaverWhat is wrong with everyone? You look like I'm going to fire you. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Seriously, what is wrong with everyone?
AnnaExcuse me, Ms. Weaver?
Ms. WeaverYes, Anna.
AnnaWell, everyone has been worrying about, you know … We’ve been worrying that you are going to fire us!
Ms. WeaverI’m not going to fire any of you! No! The reason for this meeting is to tell you what a good job you’ve been doing and give out new assignments. Budget cuts have been happening. But only one person has lost their job -- Mark in Accounting? Now, let’s talk about those new assignments.
Professor BotMs. Weaver's team is doing a good job! How did you do? Did you find all of the work words? Here's a list you can check.

AnnaHello, and welcome to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.! I am going back to school! Georgetown is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the United States. The Jesuits are a religious order known worldwide for their many colleges and universities. Students have been studying here since 1792!
SarahHey, are you finished with your report?
TaylorAlmost. I have been writing and re-writing since last night! The subject is really interesting to me.
SarahMe too! I have been studying this topic* for a long time.
AnnaAm I late?
SarahYou’re a little late. But don’t worry. The professor isn’t here yet.
AnnaHow long has the class been waiting?
TaylorWe’ve only been waiting for about 10 minutes.
AnnaOh good. Oh, no! I forgot my pencil sharpener. Excuse me, do you have a pencil sharpener I can borrow?
TaylorNo, sorry.
AnnaOh wait. I found my extra one! Whew, that was close.
AnnaSo, how long have you been studying at Georgetown?
AndrewI’ve been studying here since 2015.
AnnaAwesome. You know, I've been wanting to go back to school for a long time. So, here I am!
AndrewWell, you picked a great school. I’ve been really happy here.
AnnaAwesome. See, I’ve been working for several years now. So, going back to school makes me a little nervous.
RandallDon’t be nervous. Just pay attention and do your best!
AnnaThat is great advice. You know, I have been paying attention. But sometimes I still feel like I don’t understand. Like last week …
AnnaWhat’s that?
JadaThis is my draft.
AnnaWhat draft?
JadaThe professor told us to bring our drafts.
AnnaI think she said “giraffe.”
JadaNo. She didn’t.
AnnaHere comes the professor.
Dr. JonesHello class! Sorry I'm late, but the snow storm made getting here really difficult. I see you’ve been waiting very patiently. So, let’s get started! Who wants to give their talk first?
AnnaOh! Oh! Please, please pick me.
Dr. JonesAnna?

AnnaHere is my report on “Violins in the City.”
AnnaPeople have been looking for a solution to the problem of violins in the city. I say stop! Stop! They are not the problem! In fact, violins are part of the solution!
AnnaViolins create beautiful music that can fill a city with hope.
Dr. JonesAnna …
AnnaIf we put a violin in the hands of every child …
Dr. JonesAnna! The topic is “Violence in the city.” Violence. Not violins.
AnnaUntil next time …Like I was saying, many people are saying that violence in the city is a problem. A very big problem.

AnnaIt is no secret that Washington, D.C. has spies. Well, it should be a secret because spying is secret. But it’s not a secret. There’s even a spy museum! The International Spy Museum has created an amazing collection of spy things! And today, we will see them! My boss, Ms. Weaver, has sent me here … on a mission!
Ms. WeaverHello, Anna, are you there?
AnnaThat’s her. Yes, Agent Peacock. This is Agent Flamingo, reporting for duty.
Ms. WeaverAgent what? Look, Anna … I mean, Agent Flamingo, I want you to learn all you can about spying.
AnnaYou mean, collect intelligence?
Ms. WeaverYeah, it’s for our new show -- “D.C. Secrets.”
AnnaYou've got it, Agent Peacock. The mission is safe with me.
Ms. WeaverOh, okay, great. Just be back by noon.
AnnaAgent Peacock, I’m at an air duct!
Ms. WeaverYes, spies sometimes sneak down air ducts.
AnnaI have never snuck down an air duct. It’s dark and small. I’m afraid of dark, small places.
Ms. WeaverYou can do it, Agent Flamingo. You know, spies aren’t afraid of a little darkness.
AnnaRight. It’s just an air duct -- a dark, small air duct. Okay. I’m doing it, Agent Peacock! I am sneaking down a long, dark, small air duct. I’m having a little trouble breathing.
Ms. WeaverJust keep going, Agent Flamingo. Think of the team!
AnnaOkay, I will think of the team. I’m thinking of the team, Agent Peacock! I did it! I did it! I sneaked down an air duct. That was a little uncomfortable.
Ms. WeaverGood!
AnnaWhat's the next mission?
Ms. WeaverUmm … have you ever cracked a code?
AnnaNo.
Ms. WeaverWell, go learn. Spies use their brains.
AnnaGot it! I’ve never cracked a code before. Let’s try, Agent Flamingo! This is really hard. I'm still trying to crack the code. I've cracked the code! I've cracked the code, Agent Peacock! My brain really hurts.
Ms. WeaverGreat. Umm, Agent Flamingo, now answer this question: Do spies have to be in good shape?
Anna“Yes,” Agent Peacock! Spies have to be in really good shape! Can you hear me?
Ms. WeaverYou’re breaking up, Flamingo.
AnnaThe International Spy Museum is awesome! Agent Peacock, I completed the mission!
Ms. WeaverGreat. Great. Now, I have another very important mission for you.
AnnaGot it. See you back at H.Q.!
Ms. WeaverYummy! You brought my lunch! Thanks, Agent Flamingo!
AnnaMission completed. Agent Peacock!
(Amelia makes a face.)
Ms. WeaverDon't ask.
Special thanks go out to the International Spy Museum for letting us film in the museum!

JeanWow, thanks. So, tell me, which museums are good?
AnnaWell, they are all good. But they’re all different. There are science museums and history museums and art and culture museums.
JeanI want to see an unusual museum.
AnnaI like the Sculpture Garden. Have you ever seen sculptures in a garden? It is really artistic!
JeanI have never seen a garden of sculptures! I’ll write that on my list!
AnnaHave you been to the Museum of the American Indian? I’ve visited that museum many times. It is very peaceful.

JeanBut the zoo has lions (makes sound of lion roaring) and elephants (makes sound of elephant trumpeting) and zebras (makes no sound)! If you have never seen a real, live elephant, you must. They are so majestic.
AnnaI will. I will! (writes list) There. I’ve written my own must-see zoo animal list!
JeanHave fun at the zoo and thanks, Anna!
